Recently, I've been spending some time mulling over various ideas and options for the Warami blog. You would think that, coming from a technical background, writing a series of articles on small business technology would be quite easy and straightforward....which it kinda is - as long as you follow one golden rule.
Finding your passion
The initial mistake I made was asking people what they would like to see in a technology blog. Not the dumbest question in the world but it is one which has a quite subtle yet dramatic effect on the outcome - you start substituting your passions for those of others. And once the passion drops out of your writing we all know what happens to the quality.
Lead not follow
Although I received some good suggestions I soon realised that I needed to lead - not follow. If the blog articles are to stand up (and out) of their own accord they need to be insightful. A case of act not react. Something that reminds me of the (famous?) Henry Ford quote: "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses"
Look under your nose
Which brings me on to the blog series "Small Business Insights for 2009". As a Microsoft Partner we contribute to and can access an annual survey that reports on the IT attitudes and expectations of small to medium sized businesses. Having received and read this years report it suddenly dawned on me that the sheer wealth of key trends and topical subject matter contained within it would make for an excellent blog series.
Coming up
So, over the next few weeks and months I'm going to be dissecting some of the report's key findings and taking a closer look at why they are important and what small businesses should be doing to in order to take best advantage. Here's a taster of some of the subjects I'm looking to cover:
- SME's claim to be focusing on reducing staff and IT costs yet are underinvesting in the best cost-saving technologies. Why is this and what can be done to encourage more IT consolidation and virtualization?
- Microsoft Partners anticipate that only about one-third of SME's will make more green IT investment this year? Why the lack of uptake and what should small businesses be doing to enhance their green credentials?
- The deployment of Business Intelligence solutions is growing. What does this mean for the smaller business and what solutions and applications are being adopted?
- Telecommuting and remote working will continue to drive the demand for mobile solutions. What does the future of this market look like and how can small businesses best offer remote working to their employees?
- Cloud computing and Software-as-a-Service will become ever more ubiquitous within SME's. What types of application are leading the way here and what should a small business look out for when selecting a SaaS provider?
