If you use a laptop on business or carry around a USB memory stick then it's quite likely that you may have a lot of sensitive and important data that needs kept secure whilst you are on the move. Here are a few handy tips for keeping information safe: Keep an up-to-date backupSounds simple, but this is often something that is ignored or only done occasionally. Backing up your data is still one of the easiest (and best) ways to protect yourself from loss, damage or theft. Encrypt sensitive dataFor added protection consider encrypting any confidential documents stored on your laptop or USB memory stick. TrueCrypt for example, is an excellent (and free) open-source product that allows you to encrypt areas on your hard disk for safe file storage. TrueCrypt also supports the full encryption of local and attached hard drives. For another good all-in-one encryption solution consider buying (or upgrading to) Windows 7 Ultimate with any new laptop as this includes an in-built feature called BitLocker which also offers full disk encryption for hard drives and attached devices. In addition to TrueCrypt, Mac users can also take advantage of the built-in FileVault feature which provides encryption support for your home directory/documents. Consider 'not moving' important filesGiven 'data on the move' is still the number one category of data security breach (the others are accidental exposure, hacking, insider theft and subcontractors) it might also be worth considering using a technology like Remote Desktop/Terminal Services in order to access your data. In this scenario all your data and files stay in a secure, central location as it is only the user interface (screen) that is transferred to your laptop or mobile device. Any additions and alternatives? I'd love to hear what other people are doing to keep their files safe and secure. What systems and software do you use for protecting data? |
