Introduction"Online services". "Cloud computing". "Software-as-a-Service" (SaaS). These have been some of the buzz words of recent times as the big software companies start looking to the next generation of Internet applications in order to maintain and generate revenue growth.
Microsoft's Business Productivity Online Suite is a bundle of web-based applications that look set to compete head on with rival products from companies like Google and HyperOffice. It contains online versions of some of their most popular collaboration and productivity applications including Exchange (email, contacts and calendars), Sharepoint (document sharing and intranet), LiveMeeting (for conferencing, presenting and sharing resources) and Office Communications (presence and instant messaging). Notably, it does not yet extend to include applications from their flagship Microsoft Office suite of applications.
