According to a recent YouGov survey commissioned by the British Chambers of Commerce and Microsoft, IT security failures are costing two-thirds of the businesses surveyed an estimated £1,259 per annum.

Yet two-fifths of respondents have not even installed a basic firewall onto PCs and over half don’t automatically patch or update all the PCs in their business.

Microsoft Windows Vista was designed to help strengthen your defences against Internet threats. Indeed, Microsoft claims it's the most secure operating system that the company has released to date.

Here's how it can help protect your business:

Defend your network from malware

Windows vista has a number of new features designed to protect you from harmful software like viruses, worms and spyware:

  • User Account Control allows users to perform most common tasks without requiring administrator level privileges. This helps to minimise the effects of malware, the installation of unauthorised software and unapproved system changes
  • Windows Defender helps protect your computer against unwanted applications, popups and spyware
  • Windows Firewall blocks most unsolicited inbound traffic to your computer - helping ensure your data, computers and networks are not compromised
  • Windows Security Centre constantly checks the status of your firewall, anti-virus software, malware protection and automatic updates. Alerts and notifications are brought to you in real-time should any of these security features encounter problems or threats

Protect sensitive data

  • BitLocker drive encryption can be used to protect the entire contents of a laptop or desktop computer. The entire Windows volume is encrypted to help prevent unauthorized users from breaking Windows file and system protections
  • You can use Encrypting Files System (EFS) to encrypt files and folders to help protect data from unauthorized access

Backup critical information

Windows Vista includes a new 'Backup and Restore Center' that aims to make backing up much easier with a full range of feature to protect your data:

  • Standard file backup uses a simple category approach that allows you to easily specify which type of files you want to backup
  • Complete PC Backup takes a full backup of your entire machine, allowing you to restore the entire operating system, data, applications and system configuration in the event of a hard drive failure or other disaster
  • System restore allows you to 'undo' system changes to your computer without affecting your personal files and data. This is useful in the event that an unexpected change to your system causes Windows to behave unpredictably.
